I already had an answer before asking.
I already figured out a direction, a goal before spreading the idea.
And I saw the results that I delivered end up in an archive. Output unused.
What stood in my way was my knowledge. In many ways.
Yes, I can’t answer my own questions. Someone else has to ask the questions, or someone else has to answer the questions. In any case, the person asking the questions needs to listen beyond him- or herself to get the core.
I needed to learn, practice and experience listening - beyond my knowledge. Stop assuming. Only bring the intention to understand. While discovering that listening beyond yourself, not knowledge, is the greatest gift you can give to people, including yourself.
Being busy with the next step already, with getting into action, with the work to be done, the results to be gained, the milestones to be met. Instead, start to ‘see’ people. Start with them to build results that will be used. And by doing so, preventing updates, new versions and project cancellations.
3 tips to gain clarity on what people want and need:
TIP #1: First, reach out for a conversation. The only thing you need right now. Trust your knowledge. It will be with you, although you won’t need it here :-).
TIP #2: Bring one thing to the conversation: the intention to understand. Open the conversation with two topics (X and Y) you want to gain clarity about. Ask if your question suits right now. Start asking to tell you about X or make an appointment. When confused, lost or in doubt ask what the person means. Verify what you get.
TIP #3: Do only one thing throughout the conversation: listen beyond yourself. Which is difficult to do. Especially when knowledge is in your way. However, it’s the most rewarding thing to do.
It’s a conversation, conversations that make you understand. Nothing more, nothing less. Like you call a friend to ask how he is doing or if he likes to join you. A conversation helps you to deliver the results people want and need from you. More than any preparation, thinking, compliance and knowledge can do. You only need to be willing to listen - beyond your knowledge!
