I prepared, thorough, and… people still didn’t get it!
I prepared, thorough, and… ran over time!
I prepared, thorough, and… didn’t notice I’d already convinced the majority of my audience!
Presentations or documents like these, whether it's on stage, in a meeting, as a report, are boring. Really boring.
What makes them boring?
Too much focus on content. Which confuses the audience and leaves them feeling like stupid and blown away. No questions asked, except for one or two courtesy questions.
Perfectionism. As seen in the number of slides, the number of bullets or the fact that it didn't finish in the reserved amount of time.
Both coming from things like fear of not being good enough or fear of what people might think.
I've learned to get out of my own way by 'seeing' who (will) receive my 'texts' instead. So I can give people the space they need to formulate their own thoughts on the topic.
3 tips to 'see' your audience, team and discussion partner:
TIP #1: You were asked to show up, to present, to talk about a certain topic. So yes, you can do that. Right away if needed! No need to doubt yourself. You can handle your topic.
TIP #2: Focus on your audience. How could you make it interesting, a pleasure, easy or ... for them to attend your presentation, read your document? Allow yourself to be creative and to kindly guide your audience. 'See', notice and listen, instead of overwhelming them :-).
TIP #3: Show up as you are. With your imperfections. Your funny accent. Those bright blue sneakers you always wear. Your nervousness and your care. If you show up like you, and you take a deep breath while entering your moment; you will find confidence. And you will have fun. With your audience.
Release your preparation stress in favor of your audience. Because YOU can connect with people in a way endless preparations ever can’t come even near.
